The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is undergoing significant weakening, with studies showing a decline in the western boundary transport, responsible for up to 90% of the overall decline. This change could severely affect global climate patterns, leading to cooler temperatures in the North Atlantic region and triggering disruptions in global weather systems and sea-level rise. With over two decades of consistent weakening, this trend poses a critical risk for both ecosystems and the global economy.
The AMOC, an essential ocean circulation system, regulates the Earth's climate by redistributing heat and impacting weather patterns. It has now been observed to be destabilizing, with possible long-term effects on ecosystems and economies due to the shift in temperature and precipitation patterns.
