This is a Jazz Saxophone Lesson demonstrating how to improvise around the melody of Summertime. (it's part two to the video below) It's all based on using approach notes to lead you smoothly into the MAIN melody notes that define the melody. You could call them "bare bones" melodic target notes. Once you know where you're going you only need to practice the approach notes to get them in your ears and then start working your way backwards until you have explored all of the rhythmic possibilities and then you are ready to make music. The beauty of it is it's an easy thing to do and once you do the preparation, you are able to freely play around the melody and sound really melodic and like a professional player with minimal theory and years of technique exercises.

It's all based on Rick's method which you can learn in just a couple of months. It's an easy method. So easy, that lots of people see my students and think that it's too good to be true! Actually, it's truly amazing and works for anyone who's willing to do the drills.
