Step into one of the most fascinating surviving ritual traditions of the Balkans — the Ratevski Bamburci of North Macedonia.

Every year on January 20th, in the village of Ratevo (Maleshevo region), men dressed in heavy animal-skin costumes and terrifying handmade masks roam the streets, their massive metal bells echoing through the mountains. This centuries-old winter ritual — with roots going back over 600 years — blends pre-Christian pagan symbolism with Orthodox Christian celebration (St. John the Baptist / Jovanden).

The Bamburci embody a liminal force: through noise, movement, and disguise, they symbolically chase away evil spirits, disease, and misfortune, cleansing the community and ensuring fertility, health, and prosperity for the coming year.

Anthropologically, this ritual belongs to a wider family of Eurasian winter masking traditions — where inversion, fear, and chaos serve a regenerative social function. The masks, often weighing dozens of kilograms, are crafted months in advance, preserving intergenerational knowledge and local identity.

Today, the Ratevski Bamburci stand as a powerful example of living intangible heritage — where ancient cosmologies continue to resonate within contemporary rural life.
