Can water damage RV fresh water plumbing?

After installing a toilet provided by my customer, I got a call back for a water leak. However, it was on the other side of the RV and coming from the shower....only when running the shower. I discovered that the fittings were actually melting and eroding away from a chemical reaction with the chlorine in the water.....I mean why would that be a thing?
