Art and AI: Mapping imaginary worlds

Martin Disley, Artist-in-Residence at the National Library of Scotland, discusses his work combining mapping and artificial intelligence.

Much like artificial intelligence, maps have the potential to advance any combination of insight and lies, to construct reality as much as represent it.
Over the course of his residency with the Library, new media practitioner and technology researcher Martin Disley has been working with generative artificial intelligence systems and the Library's digitised collections. Feeding these algorithms with manually curated datasets of map images, the artificial intelligence began to hallucinate what it thought new additions to the collections might look like. Martin discusses his practice, artificial intelligence and working with the Library’s digitised collections in this recorded webinar.

Martin Disley’s residency with the National Library of Scotland has been funded as part of the Creative Informatics Resident Entrepreneur programme. Find out more about Martin’s project here: https://data.nls.uk/projects/artist-in-residence/
