ESS imaging instrument ODIN ready to receive neutrons
Discover ODIN — Optical and Diffraction Imaging with Neutrons — at ESS.
Working in a way similar to medical X-ray imaging, ODIN uses neutrons instead of X-rays to look deep inside materials and complex objects that are difficult or impossible to study with other techniques. By taking advantage of the pulsed neutron beam at ESS, ODIN can reveal not only where neutrons are absorbed or scattered, but also why they are missing.
This enables researchers to investigate:
• Temperature variations
• Phase transformations
• Structural evolution inside materials
ODIN is designed for a wide range of sample sizes — from Viking helmets to entire engines — opening new possibilities for neutron imaging experiments.
The instrument can generate:
• 2D neutron radiographs
• 3D neutron tomography reconstructions, similar to medical CT scans
👥 Presented by:
Robin Woracek, ODIN Instrument Scientist
Stefanos Athanasopoulos, Research Fellow on ODIN Imaging
