Cisco Making Moves #cisco #tech #shorts

Back in the late '90s, Cisco accidentally struck gold with their Versatile Interface Processor (VIP) cards the first modular design that let routers mix and match LAN and WAN interfaces like a tech buffet.

It all started as a quick hack to get Fast Ethernet into the 7500 series using port adapters from smaller 7200 routers instead of designing a whole new blade. The result? VIP cards like the FEIP, VIP2-40, and the grand finale, the VIP4-80. These things supported everything: Fast Ethernet, ATM, HSSI, ISDN, even signals you'd swear were made up.

Over 100 interface types later, Cisco moved on to SPAs (Shared Port Adapters), and now MPAs in the ASR9000 because why keep it simple?

Meanwhile, I’m here in 2025 trying to source a 256MB SDRAM stick from 20 years ago with no markings, no OEM code, and only vibes. Is it ECC? Registered? Buffered? Probably.

Either way… I think I’ve cracked it. 🔍
