New Jack City had a similar effect that Scarface had a decade earlier, inspiring certain people to take the dope game very seriously. I remember going to see New Jack City with my father and lots of us in the theatre kept laughing out loud because in a movie about drug dealing, our watching of the movie was constantly interrupted by the sounds of beepers going off in the the theatre and guys getting up and walking in and out, a constant disruptive flow.

Back in 1991, the year New Jack City was released, two brothers from the Lafayette Gardens public housing complex in Brooklyn formed their own Cash Money Brothers crew to sell crack in their projects. Their names were Damon and Myron Hardy aka World and Wise.

Damon Wise Hardy has been dead for many years and Damion “World” Hardy, most famous to the general public for being Lil Kim’s boyfriend- the two lived together in his New Jersey mansion for some time - was sentenced to six life terms in Federal Prison in May of 2015 after his case dragged on for an amazing 11 years, with Hardy in custody the entire time, claiming to be so schizophrenic that he couldn’t be held accountable for any crimes he was alleged to have committed.
Hardy was arrested in 2004 but the case dragged on for years because he was found not competent to stand trial due to schizophrenia and delusional behavior.

Meanwhile, several of Hardy’s henchmen pleaded guilty and cut deals with the government to testify against their once-feared leader.

Prosecutors won a legal victory to have Hardy forcibly medicated in order to stand trial. To be clear, he was found to actually be “insane”, as state in which you can’t be put on trial. He then refused to take any medication, which delayed his trial. Finally, prosecutors got a court order to have him forcibly medicated so he could understand what was happening and “aid in his own defense”, and his trial proceeded.
He showed no reaction as the verdict was announced, sitting at the defense table with the same blank look on his face as throughout the trial.

At one point, World, who was known for wearing two diamond earrings, stood up and told the Federal Judge in the case: "I am 100% completely innocent."

At some point in the late 90’s, not long after Biggie was slain in LA, his former protege slash side chick Lil Kim began dating World. He sort of acted as her manager. In fact, a former hit man for the Cash Money Brothers crew testified that while promoting Lil' Kim's career and trying to start his own music label, Hardy targeted hip hop parties for robberies.
"World would tell me where there was going to be industry parties and I would gather some guys and we would rob the rappers," Allen (Boo) Bryant said in Brooklyn Federal Court. "A lot of jewelry was going to be there, expensive jewelry."
The targets were not identified, and there is no evidence that Lil' Kim had anything to do with the decade-old robbery schemes.
Bryant also testified that Hardy dispatched him to pressure Hot 97 DJ FunkMaster Flex to play her songs on the #1 station in NYC. Flex had lamented that there was no way he could satisfy the airplay demands, "so World better go ahead and kill me."
Lil Kim’s Hot97 problems took a very serious turn when her Junior Mafia cohort C-Gutta opened fire at Foxy Brown’s Murder Unit entourage in front of the radio station in 2001. Kim was eventually convicted in 2004 for obstruction of justice because she wouldn’t even admit she knew the people she was with at the shooting. I guess that’s what you call keeping it too real. C-Gutta ended up serving about 15 years in prison for the crime, where one man was shot and survived.

Lil Kim was not the only celebrity connected to the case. Iron Mike Tyson almost found himself in World’s murderous sights, and was alleged to have put a hit out on the Bed-Stuy kingpin himself, though, obviously, he was never charged.

Who is this Darryl Baum that Mike Tyson dedicated his knockout victory too? His nickname on the streets of New York was “Hommo”. That name may sound familiar if you are a fan of noted shooting victim Curtis Jackson, as he is the one who shot him in front of his grandmothers house. In the song “Many Men” 50 cent- Curtis Jackson’s rapping name- he states “Hommo shot me, three weeks later he got shot down, no its clear that Im here for a real reason, cuz he got hit like I got hit, but he ain’t F’n breathin” Being the brilliant marketeer 50 Cent was he implied that he was responsible for Hommo’s death, when, in fact, it was Damion “World” Hardy who was eventually convicted of paying for Hommo’s homicide.
