Following up on my scouting report on Dwayne Haskins, I wanted to look at another of the top quarterback's in this draft class: Kyler Murray. In this video, I discussed his traits and how he combines accuracy, crazy elusiveness, and an incredible improvisational ability to create big plays.
I'll be honest with, I didn't expect to like him this much. I read in multiple posts that he is a "one read and run" quarterback, but this is FAR from the truth. He definitely made full field reads even though his offense did create a lot of busted plays in the terrible land of Big 12 defenses. In my opinion, if he can work on his pocket awareness issues that I detailed in the video, I think he's going to be a great NFL quarterback.
My Grade: Early-to-Mid First Round
Pro Comp: Russell Wilson - While both Murray and Wilson were considered "too small" coming out of college, they both share a lot of traits in their play styles - The way they spin backwards outside of pressure instead of stepping up. How they are both very accurate passers and have good deep balls. How they both can improvise like champions while having the ability to make full field reads. Now I get why a lot of people see Johnny Manziel (I thought of him at first to be honest), but Murray is a much better prospect than Manziel from purely a technical standpoint.
My Quarterback Rankings for the last two years (for those who are wondering):
1a. Josh Rosen (Early 1st)
1b. Sam Darnold (Early 1st)
3. Baker Mayfield (Early-to-mid 1st)
4. Dwayne Haskins (Early-to-mid 1st)
5. Kyler Murray (Early-to-mid 1st)
6. Lamar Jackson (2nd round)
7. Josh Allen (2nd round)
Note: I haven't look at Drew Lock and Daniel Jones yet since I can't get my hands on All-22 film for those teams. I'm on the fence if I'm going to do a video on them without it. Broadcast angles are just too deceiving for quarterback analysis.
