LONG EXPOSURE Seascape with Fujifilm X-T2 and Lee ND Filters | Landscape Photography at Flinders Bay

After such a peaceful morning the previous morning at Flinders Bay, I headed down again to the jetty to see if I could capture more of the surrounding area of the beach beyond the jetty itself. Early in the morning, the light was looking good, so I thought we might get a spectacular sunrise image.

I moved down to the beach to a small group of rocks that would provide an interesting foreground to my image. I used the water’s edge as a leading line on the right-hand side to lead the eye up to the jetty. The jetty was entering the scene from the right as well through to the middle. My first shot was at f10 for 1 second.

While the water was calm, a soft breeze was making small ripples across the surface of the water. To smooth out the surface I needed to lengthen my shutter speed, I dropped my f-stop to 14 and increased my shutter to 2 seconds. The surface was still not as smooth as I’d like. I needed to increase the shutter to 20 or 30 seconds. To achieve this I needed to cut a considerable amount of light down so I decided to use my Lee Filter 6 stop Little Stopper a Neutral Density filter that stops 6 stops of light. With this mounted to the front of the Fujifilm X-T2 and the XF 10-24mm lens, I had a shutter speed of 30 seconds, the result was much better.
