Mysterious Mafia Bosses - Vincenzo Stranieri - Sacra Corona Unita

The Sacra Corona Unita Boss Vincenzo Stranieri
Hi there. So we are spending more time shining a light on the Sacra Corona Unita, the Mafia that started in Puglia, Italy, and on some of its main characters. To be clear, this has nothing to do with the pandemic or with a beer brand – we are discussing a crime syndicate, as we often do on this channel. Today is the day we discuss Vincenzo Stranieri, the boss of the Sacra Corona Unita
When people talk about the Sacra Corona Unita and its founding process, they focus almost exclusively on Giuseppe Rogoli, known as Pino, who founded the so-called "fourth mafia," also called the Sacra Corona Unita, in a Bari prison-after receiving the approval of Umberto Bellocco. His goal was to counter, along with the 'Ndrangheta, the increasing power of the Camorra and in particular the New Organized Camorra in the Apulian territory.
What is less talked about, however, is the fact that Rogoli was not the only founder of the "Apulian Mafia," since there was also a second man-alongside him-who started this new criminal group. He is Vincenzo Stranieri, born in 1960, who is to be considered a co-founder, although then he never had the same spotlight as Rogoli.
Stranieri - like Rogoli - was an affiliate of Cutolo's Nuova Camorra Pugliese, and like his "partner" decided to start this new organization precisely to oppose Cutolo’s overwhelming power. Unlike Rogoli, the Mesagnese man was free and not in prison at the time of the founding of the Sacra Corona Unita, but he had been in prison before, including at a very early age.
In fact, in 1975, when he was only 15 years old, he was imprisoned because of repeated car thefts. A short stint in prison and Stranieri was free again, ready to go under Cutolo's protective wing in the Nuova Camorra Pugliese. After a few years, he changed his allies, switching from the Neapolitans to the Calabrians and thus forming the Sacra Corona Unita together with Pino Regoli, with tacit approval of the 'Ndrangheta.
His freedom lasted for a very short time, however. From the founding of the "fourth mafia" on May 1, 1983 (according to most sources, ed.), to the time of his last incarceration little more than a year passed. On June 7, 1984, he was arrested for the last time and remained in detention for nearly 40 years, only finding his freedom again in early 2022.
The reason for this imprisonment is to be linked to the kidnapping of Annamaria Fusco, who remained in the custody of kidnappers for months, and was released only after family members paid a hefty ransom. According to the various trials, Stranieri was the instigator of this kidnapping, although he has always denied his involvement in the events.
This conviction led him to be detained for almost a decade when, on May 23, 1992, a few hours after the Capaci Massacre, which resulted in the death of mafia prosecutor Judge Giovanni Falcone, Vincenzo Stranieri himself was taken from his cell and taken to a new penitentiary to serve his sentence under the 41 bis regime, also known as the hard prison regime, because he is considered among the more than 200 most dangerous Mafia bosses in our country. Along with him, undergoing the same treatment, was his old acquaintance as well as later territory rival, Raffaele Cutolo.
That day began a long, almost interminable chapter in Stranieri's criminal history, which led him to finally end his relationship with organized crime. This is because with the "hard prison" regime -- which prevents bosses from having communication with the outside world -- and the long detention led him to total estrangement from the world, so much so that it led him to have several periods of crisis.
In fact, Stranieri went through turbulent moments of madness, in which he even went so far as to not recognize his daughter when he was finally allowed to meet her after many years in prison. During this time in prison he also had a chance to repent, looking back on his past, the actions he committed and the consequences that followed.
His difficult time in prison, in addition to his mental issues, also saw him develop cancer in 2016. And although his sentence should have ended at that time for intervening health reasons, the justice system extended it for an additional two years, despite his critical condition and the intervention of his lawyers. Indeed, it was news in early January 2022 that his release from prison took place after 37 and a half years, one of the longest in Italian history regarding the "41 bis" regime, if not the longest.
