Coronavirus outbreak: Cuomo says New York death toll flattening but at 'terribly high rate' | FULL

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday there were 758 new COVID-19 related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll in New York State to 9,385. He said while there was a "flattening" in terms of number of deaths, it's been doing so at a "terribly high" level. Given the beginning of a "flattening of the curve," Cuomo said he wants the state to reopen and restart the economy as soon as possible but do so in a way that is safe for everyone.

He added while COVID-19 hospitalizations was at 18,700, the charts they had compiled showed there was a "flattening of the curve" in terms of people being admitted to hospital. He said the three-day discharge was also showing a flattening.

The governor also addressed confusion that has been raised about messages from him and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio about the reopening of schools. He said it must be through a coordinated approach with all levels of government. He added that if schools do not reopen until June that could mean businesses will be closed until then as well.
