The Royal Navy’s Deadliest Sinkings of WWII

At the outbreak of the Second World War, the Royal Navy stood as one of the most powerful naval forces on earth. With a global fleet of battleships, battlecruisers, carriers, and cruisers, Britain relied on its navy to protect trade routes, defend the empire, and blockade Germany. Yet despite its immense strength, the Royal Navy suffered a series of devastating losses during the early years of the war.

In this video, we examine several of the Royal Navy’s most disastrous wartime sinkings, including the losses of HMS Courageous, HMS Royal Oak, HMS Hood, and HMS Barham. These sinkings shocked Britain and demonstrated just how dangerous modern naval warfare had become during World War II.

The video begins with HMS Courageous, sunk by the German submarine U-29 only weeks after Britain declared war on Germany. Operating as part of an anti-submarine hunter-killer group in the Western Approaches, the carrier was struck by torpedoes and sank in only minutes, taking hundreds of men with her. The loss forced the Admiralty to reconsider how fleet carriers would be used against U-boats.

Next comes the dramatic sinking of HMS Royal Oak at Scapa Flow by German submarine U-47 under the command of Günther Prien. The daring penetration of Britain’s supposedly secure anchorage became one of the most famous submarine attacks of the war and exposed major weaknesses in British naval defenses.

The story then turns to the destruction of HMS Hood during the Battle of the Denmark Strait in May 1941. Known as the pride of the Royal Navy, Hood exploded after being hit during her engagement with German battleship Bismarck and sank within minutes, taking over 1,400 men down with her. Only three survived. The sinking remains one of the most infamous naval disasters in British history.

Finally, the video covers HMS Barham, torpedoed by the German submarine U-331 in the Mediterranean in November 1941. The battleship rolled over and exploded catastrophically in an event captured on film, creating one of the most recognizable naval combat recordings of the entire war.

Using survivor accounts, official reports, and historical sources, this video explores not only how these ships were lost, but also why these disasters mattered so much to Britain during World War II.
