TN NC Iron Mountain Gap Detour

As everyone knows by now, Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee. Iron Mountain Gap was hit particularly hard. Since there is easy access via a dirt road, it was decided to salvage the logs in the area. With heavy equipment in use, it would not be safe to hike in the area. Therefore a temporary detour was created.

The detour is about 6 miles long. Approximately half is on dirt/gravel/paved road(s). The trail part is extremely steep. We have added 150 'steps' to help hikers and prevent them from sliding down the hill. Use caution while hiking here.

Once salvage operations are completed we will dismantle the temporary trail.
