China Opposes US Murder Charges Against Former Cuban President Raul Castro | LIVE

LIVE updates as China strongly opposes the United States’ decision to charge former Cuban President Raúl Castro with murder, escalating diplomatic tensions involving Washington, Havana and Beijing.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it firmly opposes what it described as the United States “abusing judicial means” and pressuring Cuba. Chinese spokesperson Guo Jiakun urged Washington to stop using sanctions and legal systems as tools of pressure against Cuba.

The reaction came after the United States announced criminal charges against Raul Castro linked to the 1996 downing of planes operated by the exile group Brothers to the Rescue, which killed four Americans.

US prosecutors charged Castro with conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals, murder and destruction of aircraft in one of the most dramatic escalations in US Cuba relations in decades.

The Trump administration has intensified pressure on Cuba in recent months while calling for political change on the island.

Cuba has condemned the indictment as politically motivated and defended the 1996 action as a response to alleged airspace violations.

Meanwhile, Russia has also backed Cuba, criticizing Washington’s actions as interference in Cuban affairs and warning against threats and sanctions.

The developments have raised global geopolitical concerns as tensions grow between the US and countries aligned with Cuba including China and Russia. Analysts say the case could further strain relations across Latin America and deepen Cold War style diplomatic divisions.
