2025 Spring Lecture Series: Carrying Culture Forward for the Next Generation
Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) will sponsor a presentation this week as part of its spring lecture series featuring prominent voices in Indigenous knowledge, art, culture and language.
Justin Langan, a Métis leader from Swan River, Manitoba, will present his talk, “The Future of Indigenous Languages in a Digital Age.”
Langan will explore the intersection of Indigenous languages and modern technologies, emphasizing how these tools can revitalize and safeguard these languages. Drawing from his extensive experience in Indigenous advocacy and community development, Langan will illustrate how innovative approaches can enable younger generations to connect with their cultural heritage. The presentation will offer practical advice for educators and learners, demonstrating how technology can enhance language learning, reinforce cultural identity and foster a sustainable future for Indigenous languages.
Langan is the founder and executive director of O’KANATA, a nonprofit that has earned international recognition, including the 2024 Small Business Champions Award. His work includes launching the Indigenous Film Archive, a Native youth podcast, and Heartwarmers, a business supporting community initiatives. Langan is also preparing to attend law school to advocate for Indigenous and human rights globally.
The lecture is scheduled for noon, Friday, April 11, in Shuká Hít within the Walter Soboleff Building, 105 Heritage Way, in Juneau. The event will be live-streamed and posted on SHI’s YouTube channel.
