Review of Retro Fighters DC6 controller for Dreamcast / Nintendo Switch -see description #techreview
@retro.fighters hooked me up with their new DC6 controller to review.
TL; DR I spent probably 10-15 hours using this, and came away impressed. 7.5/10 overall.
The controller plays really nice. It was designed with 6-button fighting games in mind. I didn’t have one to play for the Dreamcast, so Dynamite Cop had to do. (I also played thru Andro Dunos II, a shmup on Switch eventually).
Dpad: The dpad is a circle dpad. It’s a bit “mushy,” but in a good way. It reminds me of the original Sega Genesis / MD style dpads, but this one is softer / smoother. Definitely would be nice for fighting games that require lots of ⬇️↘️➡️ movements without destroying your thumb. It played surprisingly nice on a pretty intense shmup as well. I wouldn’t recommend this kind of dpad for precision platformers (ie Mega Man’s), but for shmups it was niiice. I felt like it read my inputs accurately, but personally I prefer a + style dpad (no circle).
Buttons are 🤌 Nice click noise; they felt less raised up than most controllers I’m used to. They reminded me of the “A” button on a GameCube Wavebird. A bit mushy, and less clicky than most Switch / Xbox controllers. I couldn’t feel the buttons springing back at my thumb on every press.
There are only two shoulder buttons. For modern systems, two of the shoulder buttons are mapped to the 5th and 6th face buttons.
Ergonomics: A bit on the small side, but very comfortable overall.
The controller was very responsive, easy to hook up to my Switch via USB dongle, and I didn’t notice input lag.
Overall: I’d give it a 7.5/10. It’s a very good controller. The dpad is good, the buttons are good. So why didn’t I rate it higher? I consider a 7.5 an average to slightly above average rating. This is a good controller, but compared to using the Switch Pro controller as my 10/10, this one falls a bit short of that.
