BMW i7 Service Disconnect | High Voltage Battery Removal

Disconnecting the high-voltage (HV) battery on a BMW i7 is a critical safety procedure required before performing any major electrical repairs or after a collision. Because the i7 operates on a high-voltage architecture, you must follow the manufacturer’s "de-energizing" protocols to avoid the risk of fatal electric shock.
Step-by-Step Disconnection Guide
Preparation: Ensure the vehicle is in a "Ready-Off" state. Switch off the ignition and move the key fob at least 15 feet away to prevent accidental re-energization.
Access the Service Disconnect: Open the trunk and locate the service flap on the right-hand side trim panel.
Release the HV Safety Plug: Behind the flap, you will find the green or orange High-Voltage Service Disconnect connector. Press the locking tab down and pull the connector apart.
Verify Deactivation: The system is officially "off" when the integrated borehole in the connector is fully visible. You can insert a padlock through this hole to prevent the system from being reconnected while you work.
Disconnect the 12V Battery: Crucially, you must also disconnect the negative terminal of the 12V battery (usually located in the front motor compartment or trunk) to fully shut down the vehicle's control modules.
Safety Warning
Wait at least 10 minutes after disconnection for the high-voltage capacitors to discharge before touching any orange cables. Always use insulated tools and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) rated for high-voltage work. If you are not a certified EV technician, do not attempt to service the high-voltage system.
