Largest Ship to Ever Transit the Panama Canal! COSCO DEVELOPMENT at Agua Clara Locks (May 2, 2017)
Panama Canal Ship Spotting May 2 video 4 of 4
The massive 13,092 TEU COSCO Shipping Neo-Panamax container vessel COSCO DEVELOPMENT slowly and carefully makes her approach to the new Agua Clara Locks on Gatun Lake on it's historic northbound Panama Canal transit. With the help of the Panama Canal Authority tugs CERRO PICACHO (bow), CERRO LA VIEJA (starboard), and CERRO CAMPANO (stern), the 141,800 ton COSCO DEVELOPMENT enters and passes through the new Agua Clara Locks of the expanded Panama Canal.
This vessel is the first 13,000+ TEU container ship to transit the new expanded Panama Canal and the largest vessel of any kind to ever transit from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. However, since I shot this video, a slightly larger capacity vessel the OOCL FRANCE at 13,208 TEU made the transit in late May, 2017.
This vessel likely paid over a million dollars for this 10 hour transit. However it would have costed several million dollars in fuel and other expenditures if it had to travel around South America and would add another three weeks transit time from Asia to the east coast of the United States.
Also worth mentioning that COSCO Shipping is (as of April 1, 2017) part of the Ocean Alliance with partners CMA CGM, Evergreen, and OOCL. COSCO was previously part of the CKYHE alliance.
This is also my last video I shot during my two week stay in Panama.

Sorry, the caption says 13,000 TEU but it's actually 13,092 TEU.
Please note: This is a very long video, so feel free to skip ahead - the ship begins to enter the lock chamber at about 5:30 and a nice close-up view of the bridge/wheelhouse at 9:15
