The 1943 Penny That Wasn’t Copper | WWII Coin Story

Most people think the rare 1943 penny is the copper one…
but the normal 1943 penny wasn’t copper at all.
During World War II, copper was urgently needed for ammunition, wiring, and military equipment.
So in 1943, the U.S. Mint changed the metal and produced pennies made from zinc-coated steel.
That’s why these coins looked almost like dimes and confused many Americans when they first appeared.
But here’s the twist.
A few 1943 pennies were accidentally struck on copper planchets left over from the previous year.
Those rare error coins later became some of the most valuable pennies ever discovered.
By 1944, the Mint returned to copper-based pennies again, often using recycled shell casings from the war.
A tiny coin… from one of the most dramatic moments in American history.
