Don't Look Up When You Think: Public Speaking Tips

Looking up to think is costing you credibility. When you look up mid-speech, your audience doesn't see concentration; they see distance. Maybe nerves. Maybe someone who doesn't want to be there.

@MattAbrahams says the fix is simple: look down instead. It reads as thoughtful. It reads as present. And combined with a natural sideways step during transitions, it looks completely intentional.

For large rooms, divide into quadrants, and move your gaze naturally between them. For small groups, make real eye contact with each person. Always return before you continue.

Your eyes tell the room where your head is. Make sure they're telling the right story.

What's your go-to move when you lose your train of thought mid-presentation?
