STORYLINE:
U-S led coalition forces have beeing continuing their efforts to secure areas in southern Iraq by destroying abandoned Iraqi munitions and setting up checkpoint along the main roads.
Soldiers from the Royal Irish Regiment checked out empty barracks on Thurday that had seemingly been abandoned by Iraqi fighters.
In their haste, the Iraqi militia left behind a large store of munitions and other weaponry including boxes of grenades and mortars.
Munitions that were too unstable to be moved were destroyed on the spot, the rest was taken out in to the desert and blown up.
British forces exploded the arms fearing Iraqi fighters might come back for them.
On Friday, in Az Zubayr coalition troops continued to push north.
Convoys of military vehicles were occasionally met by children who waved from the roadside.
Elsewhere, British and US troops set up roadblocks and inspected Iraqi civilian vehicles as they drove down the roads.
The US has claimed Iraqi militia masquerading as civilians has attacked coalition troops.
On Friday, US president George W Bush said Iraqi troops had opened fire under the flag of surrender.
