Italians can't speak English..? They certainly have borrowed many English words in contexts such as technology, media, governance, marketing, and even everyday conversations...

For example, words like "smartphone", "broadcast, "spending review", "schedulare" (a made up Italianized verb from the English "to schedule") have taken over their original translations of "telefono cellulare", "trasmissione", "revisione della spesa", "pianificare". The list goes on...

This trend, known as "anglicism" or "linguistic borrowing," has seen many English words being adopted into the Italian vocabulary.

Why? Globalization! And also, English expressions are simpler, more immediate, and perceived as "cool" and "trendy" (two words Italians use constantly).

Nonetheless, the paradox is that Italians still struggle with learning and speaking English fluently. All of our movies and TV shows are dubbed, our school system focuses more on grammar than real-life conversations, and the opportunities to be fully immersed in the English language are limited.
