Raising Floor in 155 yr. Old House - Part 1, Split Joists
This 1859 house was used as an old schoolhouse.
Typical of pre-1900 construction, it uses notched tenon joists set into a mortise beam, which is no longer allowed since it causes the joists to split.
Here, split joists have caused a hardwood hemlock floor to drop by 1/2". We raise the floor and repair with joist hangars, and also discover a very different problem, continued in Part II.
