Alexander Cambitoglou: A Celebration of a Creative Life

Professor Alexander Cambitoglou was the Founding Director of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens.

Born in Thessalonike in 1922, he studied at the University of Thessalonike followed by postgraduate study in the United Kingdom. He received his first appointment at the University of Mississippi before moving on to Bryn Mawr College. In 1961 he came to the University of Sydney where he went on to become the Arthur and Renee George Professor of Classical Archaeology in 1978. He was the first Greek Australian to be appointed as a University Professor in Australia.

Professor Cambitoglou directed the first Australian led archaeological excavations in Greece, at Zagora on Andros, in 1967, and later at Torone in the Chalkidike. He served as Curator of the Nicholson Museum from 1963 until 2000.

In 1980 Professor Cambitoglou established the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens (https://aaia.sydney.edu.au/), which would become his lasting legacy. The AAIA is the only Australian Institute of its kind, facilitating archaeological fieldwork and fostering cultural engagement between Greece and Australia for more than forty years.

Professor Cambitoglou died in November 2019 at the age of 97. His legacy continues, and in March 2022 (following numerous delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic) his past students and colleagues gathered to commemorate his life. This video is the recording of that commemorative event.
