Exploring Rays Hill tunnel along the Abandoned PA turnpike
Ray's Hill Tunnel, 5,532 feet long. Built in 1881 as part of the failed South PA railroad. Purchased in 1938 by the PA turnpike commission and open for traffic in 1940. Closed in 1968 due to traffic issues from narrowing 4 lanes down to lanes of traffic into the tunnels. Cheaper to re-route the turnpike rather than bore a new tunnel.
