How to Make Navajo Blue Corn Mush Ivana Holiday

This recipe is another way to help strengthen our knowledge about cultural foods. Corn is used to make many traditional dishes, including kneel-down bread, blue corn mush, dried steamed corn and roasted corn. Blue corn mush is a hot porridge which is great on cold days. There is no correct or wrong way to make Navajo blue corn mush. Many families have their own teachings and directions when making blue corn mush. Blue corn mush can be topped with fruits, honey, nuts, or sugar. Enjoy making this recipe.
Ingredients:
3 ½ cups of water
1 cup of roasted blue cornmeal
1 teaspoon of juniper ash

Directions:
1. In a medium sized pot, add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil.
2. While the water starts to boil, add 1 cup of roasted blue cornmeal and 1 ½ cups of water to a mixing bowl. Mix both ingredients thoroughly to prevent any lumps of clumps.
3. Once the water starts to boil, add 1 teaspoon of juniper ash in the pot and stir it with a spoon.
4. Turn down the heat to medium low and slowly add the blue corn mixture from the bowl into the pot while stirring to combine all the ingredients.
5. Continue to stir the mixture for 2 minutes to make sure there are no lumps.
6. After you finish stirring the mixture for 2 minutes, let it boil for another 5-10 minutes while stirring it occasionally.
7. Once the mixture becomes a thick consistency, it will be done cooking.
8. Remove from heat and begin serving.
