Virtues of Resistance | Session Seven: Not Easy to Stand Tall: The Coercion of Conscience

This session looks at Martha Neuffer and Johannes Harms. We studied the Open Letter from the Jehovah Witnesses, June 1937, "First Conscientious Resister" article in The New York Times, Sept. 17, 1939, and, Johannes Harms' note.

This is a 10-session course on ethics through which participants explore how professionals across diverse backgrounds mounted resistance, navigated dilemmas, and responded with civic courage during the Nazi period. The purpose of encountering these ethical exemplars together is to nurture our moral imagination and to grow in the virtues of resistance amid our own circumstances and in our own contexts.

The recording includes only the teaching portion. The discussion portion is a benefit of registered attendees and is clipped from the published recording to protect the confidentiality of participants.

About the Facilitator:
Amanda Achtman is the Director of Ethics at Canadian Physicians for Life. She teaches bioethics as an adjunct faculty member of St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry. Amanda is a 2025-2026 recipient of the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem Holocaust Educators Scholarship. She was previously a volunteer guide at the former concentration camp, Majdanek, and has visited more than 50 Holocaust memorial sites worldwide.

This course takes inspiration from the educational methods of the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem Holocaust Educators Scholarship Program. The syllabus draws on the educational resources of the German Resistance Museum in Berlin, the Memorials at the Sites of Nazi Euthanasia ‘Aktion T4’, and the Plötzensee Memorial Center.
