Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates which are formed by polymerisation of large number of monosaccharide monomers. They are also called GLYCANS. they are branched and unbranched. Depending upon the composition, polysaccharides are two types homoploysaccharides (HOMOGLYCANS) and heteropolysaccharides (HETEROGLYCANS). They are not sweet except sugar. Almost insoluble in water and decrease effect on osmotic potential. Therefore ideal for storage and structural components. Polysaccharides are large sized and unable to pass through the cell membranes. Active process and secretive vesicles of golgi apparatus are needed for passing the cell membrane. Polysaccharides are mainly of 3 types storage (eg. STARCH, GLYCOGEN AND INSULIN), structural (CHITIN AND CELLULOSE) and mucopolysaccharides (KERATIN SULPHATE, CHRONTIN SULPHATE, HEPARIN, PECTIN, HEMICELLULOSE, HYALURONIC ACID, PLANTAGO OVATA, MARINE ALGAE.
