“Cold Frosty Morning” by Sergeant James Old (AMC Band)

The U.S. Army Materiel Command Band is proud to live and serve in beautiful Huntsville, Alabama. Nestled in the foothills of Appalachia, this region of the country has a storied musical past. As immigrants spread into the mountains and hills of Appalachia, they became isolated and cutoff from the fast-developing communities on the coast. As the generations passed, this isolation caused the Irish, Scottish, and English folk songs that these early Americans brought with them from Europe to change into something new and different. This clawhammer banjo rendition of “Cold Frosty Morning” is a wonderful example of this phenomenon. While its oft contested origins are normally credited as Old-time American, its roots in European folk music are easily discernible.
