Log on to any of the KLR forums and the first thing you'll notice is everyone is talking about something called the doohickey. I visit my longtime friend Eagle Mike who has worked on more KLR's than anyone else. We learn what it is, why it's a problem, the differences over the years and generations, why it's still a problem on the gen 3 (2022 KLR), and what can be done to fix it. Also, we address why we think Kawasaki hasn't fixed it yet.

The Doohickey refers to the tensioning system for the balancer chain. NOT the cam chain. KLR's up to 2007 had common failure of the lever. 2008 and later KLR's had an improved lever, but a spring that could not tension the chain properly leading to increased engine wear and vibration. While many riders never fix it, and don't suffer major issues, it's rolling the dice.
