HRM: A human brain-inspired replacement to Chain-of-Thought

The Hierarchical Reasoning Model (HRM) is a new approach to AI that challenges the dominance of chain-of-thought reasoning and massive-scale models. Inspired by multi-timescale brain processes, HRM organizes reasoning into nested recurrent modules: a slow, abstract planner at the top and a fast, detail-oriented worker at the bottom. This layered structure allows HRM to break complex problems into manageable steps, exchange feedback between levels, and produce more reliable solutions. Despite having only 27 million parameters and no pretraining, HRM achieves strong results on reasoning benchmarks like ARC-AGI, Sudoku, and maze-solving, highlighting the power of structured reasoning over brute force scaling. Researchers point to its efficiency, interpretability, and robustness as signs of a promising direction for the future of AI, where models prioritize reasoning strategies rather than raw size.
