How did Vikings pay for things without coins? ⚔️
While they didn’t mint their own for most of the Viking Age, they did have coins from abroad — Arabic Dirhams, Frankish money, and Anglo-Saxon coins — sometimes through trade… sometimes through less-than-honest means. 🪙
Most of the time, silver was king. Hack silver cut into pieces, jewelry, ingots, livestock, and crafted goods were all part of a sophisticated bullion economy. Archaeology even shows weights and hoards used to measure wealth. ⚖️💎
