Trump and Petro Discuss Counter-Terrorism Drug Trafficking and Sanctions at White House

President Donald Trump hosted Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House on February three for their first face-to-face meeting after months of tensions. The discussions primarily focused on cooperation against terrorism drug trafficking and sanctions. Despite an initial poor start the relationship improved quickly. The nearly two-hour closed-door meeting attended by senior officials also addressed Venezuela and regional security. A key issue was drug trafficking as Colombia remains a major center for coca and cocaine production. This followed a 2025 determination criticizing Colombias drug control performance with Trump designating Colombia as failing its obligations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged stronger joint enforcement which Petro publicly rejected citing efforts to remove coca crops and implement alternative farming programs. Rising rhetoric had increased tensions before the meeting.
