China Conducts Military Exercises as Lai Ching-te Sworn in as Taiwan's President | EWTN News Nightly

"Strong punishment", is how China is characterizing its military exercises around Taiwan. This comes just 3 days after the country's newly elected president made a controversial inauguration speech where he vowed to keep Taiwan's democracy safe. Lai Ching-te, the Taiwanese President said, "I want to call on China to cease their political and military intimidation against Taiwan, share with Taiwan the global responsibility of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait as well as the greater region, and ensure the world is free from the fear of war." The sea and air exercises encircle Taiwan. China's military said it was meant as a stern warning to its opponents seeking independence. China claims self-governed Taiwan as part of its national territory. Author of "The Coming Collapse of China" and "The Great US-China Tech War," Gordon Chang, joins to tell us about today's events. Chang shares whether there is anything notable about today's activity or whether it is simply China sending a message to Lai Ching-te. From a strategic standpoint, Chang discusses why China would perform these exercises out in the open for Taiwan to see and study.
