Poland Downs Russian Drones NATO Deploys Troops East

Poland has drawn a red line. After dozens of Russian drones breached its airspace, NATO is pushing back—and reinforcing its eastern frontier.

On September 9-10, 2025, 19-23 drones crossed into Poland, some launched via Belarus. Multiple drones were shot down by Polish and allied jets, with civilian airports shuttered during the incursion.
Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty—seeking consultation from all member states. The assault triggered widespread outrage; leaders condemned the move as a deliberate provocation by Moscow.
In response, NATO launched Operation Eastern Sentry, deploying additional jets, air defense systems, and a frigate to shore up the alliance’s eastern flank. NATO countries including France, Germany, Denmark, and the UK are contributing forces.
Romania also reported a drone incursion this week, marking two violations of NATO territory in a short span. NATO leaders say these breaches show aggression isn’t limited to one border—it spans the whole eastern front.
