This VPN test starts with me opening the app, and the overall design of these apps is not very different between providers. I only have to note that AtlasVPN’s app is the most minimalistic so far, while NordVPN adds a neat visual map of all its servers and locations, great if you’d like to measure the distance by yourself.

Talking about servers, each provider has a server list available as soon as you download VPN and open the app. Considering that the average user will want to connect right away, this makes sense.

Coming back to the topic of ease of use, it’s very easy to pick a server, and all providers feature some sort of “Quick connect” feature that just pumps out the fastest or nearest server. Good, I like it simple, and that’s also why I’m a bit upset with CyberGhost and the fact it brings up a bunch of tabs every time, and I have to deal with them.

🧰 What are the best VPN features?

Features are a very big part of any best VPN provider, so here’s my take on them.I’ll open up with one common thing: ad-blocking. All 5 providers offer a feature targeting the removal of ads, trackers, and notifications.

The difference is how much they improve these features afterward. Like, NordVPN decided to strap in an antivirus, so Threat Protection blocks malware downloads as well! And ExpressVPN’s Threat Manager is more focused on blocking websites from passing your activity records to third parties.

On the contrary, a standard feature like the Kill Switch works almost identically between each provider, but that makes sense. A Kill Switch is supposed to be invaluable in preventing IP leaks during a VPN or internet disruption.

🔐 Which is the most secure VPN?

In terms of security basics, I started with a NordVPN test and then went through the rest, but the order didn’t matter. All these providers have the most secure encryption algorithms employed. On the software level, there’s barely any difference.

However, I did notice a difference when it comes to privacy measures. I prefer to use a VPN located in a privacy-friendly jurisdiction, outside of intelligence-sharing alliances. That said, NordVPN, ExpressVPN and CyberGhost are the best in this regard, while Atlas VPN and Surfshark don’t have the most reliable jurisdiction.

Unfortunately, that’s not all the details. A quick Google search reveals the fact that both ExpressVPN and CyberGhost are affected by the controversy surrounding the shady dealings of their parent company - Kape Technologies. NordVPN is not an innocent lamb either, with a confirmed 2018 breach, even though it was rather insignificant.
