Navy Week Brings USS Omaha Sailors to Freedom Park — Celebrating 250 Years of U.S. History

Omaha Navy Week is underway, bringing sailors from the USS Omaha to Freedom Park to tour the USS Hazard — a 1944 minesweeper and national historic landmark that is now the only one of its kind left in the world. The sailors are here as part of the Navy's annual outreach program, connecting with communities across the country to educate the public about the Navy's history, career opportunities, and role in protecting American freedom.

The visit coincides with the College World Series and the nation's 250th birthday celebration. Sailors shared what it meant to walk the decks of a ship their predecessors served on — and reflected on how far naval technology has come. Navy Week runs through June 21st. Since 2005, the Navy has visited up to 15 cities per year in areas without a significant naval presence. Sailors from the USS Omaha are based in San Diego.
