The return of Otto Frank | Episode #7 | Anne Frank House

On 3 June 1945, ten months after the arrest, Otto Frank returned to Amsterdam and went to Jan and Miep Gies's home. He was relieved to find all the helpers had survived.

The next day, Otto visited Prinsengracht 263. On 12 June, he simply wrote 'Anne' in his diary. She would have turned 16 that day.

A month later, Lien Brilleslijper told him that Anne and Margot had died at concentration camp Bergen-Belsen. It was a pitch-black day for Otto.

When Miep Gies heard the news, she gave Otto Anne’s diary and other writings, which she had saved since the arrest. Otto, unaware anything had been preserved, was deeply moved.

He didn’t yet know Anne’s words would shape the rest of his life.

This post is part of the series 'The Return of Otto Frank', which commemorates the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War by telling the story of Otto's journey back to Amsterdam from Auschwitz concentration camp and what happened next.

Follow along to see what Otto's journey was like.
