Laminate Sample #24: Spread-Tow Carbon / Epoxy with PVC Foam Core

Laminate Sample #24 is about two things: spread-tow reinforcements and the necessity of perforating core. For comparison, we'll look at Laminate Sample #18, which uses the same 3mm (1/8") Divinycell H80 core, but with perforations and an easy-to-see-through e-glass laminate. What a difference a bunch of little holes make!

Most foam core materials can be purchased pre-perforated from the manufacturer. This can save you a TON of tedious drilling.

Reinforcement: 185g Hexcel PrimeTex
Core: Divinycell 3mm / 0.125" H80
Resin: Proset 135/224

It is a shame to waste pretty carbon on a panel that comes out like this but that's what these laminate samples are all about: demonstrating how and how not to use a wide variety of composite materials while giving some idea of relative weights and stiffness.

This panel would be lighter by a bit if the resin were bled off the mold-side skin. This could be maybe 10% - or about 130g per square meter. Some resin would be needed to fill in the perforations in the core... but less than the extra that would have been squeezed out. Laminate Sample #18 can be a good guide weight-wise because the reinforcements are approximately the same areal weight.
