Max Payne's Bullet Time Was Remarkable

Max Payne released two years after The Matrix in 2001 and, much like that film two years before, introduced bullet time as one of its core concepts.

But bullet time wasn't just introduced as a gimmick, cynically added to help Max Payne ride the wave of hype around the effect following the Wachowski sisters' extraordinary film - it integrated utterly and completely into everything it did.

In this video, I examine some of the historical context around bullet time in gaming, and futher explore the three areas I believe were most important in making the effect's inclusion as successful as it was - namely, the way the game dealt with movement, its cinematic qualities and its connection to the plot itself.
