Leicester lockdown has caused “confusion and alarm” say critics - BBC News

The prime minister has defended the decision to reimpose a lockdown on the city of Leicester, following criticism that the government's handling of the crisis has created confusion and alarm. Critics say key questions about the measures haven't been answered.

The stricter lockdown was announced after a surge in cases of coronavirus in the city. Lockdowns in the rest of England are being relaxed.

Schools in Leicester are to be shut to most children and non-essential shops have been closed again for at least two weeks. Only essential travel to and from the city is allowed.

Leicester is the first large area in the UK to face a local lockdown. It’s a response that could be repeated in towns and cities across the UK in the coming months, to deal with localised spikes of infection.

Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting from Sian Lloyd, Science Editor David Shukman and Navtej Johal.
