Huge coal mine in Germany

Welcome to the Hambach open-pit coal mine in environmentally conscious Germany... This mine has been in operation since 1978 and has a surface of 17 square miles (43.8 sq km)! The mine has swallowed 90% of the ancient Hambach Forest and even surrounding villages.

Forty million tons of lignite (brown coal) are mined annually, and there is an estimated 1,772 million tons still left to be mined. It is planned to close down by the year 2030.

Although Germany is transitioning into a green energy powered country, 22.5% of Germany's electricity generation still comes from lignite and 12.9% from hard coal.

Germany is the biggest source of lignite in the world, closely followed by China.
