How India Reached Mars On First Attempt With Less Budget Than A Hollywood Film
what if i told you that india reached mars
on its very first attempt —
when america failed.
when russia failed.
when china failed.
and did it all for less money than
hollywood spent making a single movie
about fictional space?
in 2012, when isro announced the
mangalyaan mission, the world laughed.
american and russian experts questioned
india's technology. the budget was only
₹450 crore — while hollywood's space
film "gravity" cost ₹700 crore the
same year.
india spent ₹250 crore less than a
fictional film — to do something real.
but the money wasn't even the hardest part.
where other countries take 5 to 10 years
to prepare a mars mission — isro's
scientists did it in just 15 months.
15 months of no sleep.
15 months of missing family.
15 months where one wrong calculation
meant everything was over.
on 5 november 2013 — mangalyaan launched.
and then began 300 days of waiting.
at that time the global success rate
for mars missions was only 40%.
6 out of every 10 missions had failed.
and then came 24 september 2014.
7:17 am.
the signal arrived.
mangalyaan had successfully entered
mars orbit.
and the scientists who had given up
their sleep, their families, their rest —
broke down in tears.
india became the only country in the
world to succeed on its very first attempt.
this is not just a space story.
this is india's story.
