PAF and Kizilelma Agreement in Turkey? || F-7PG Crash and JF-17 Thunder Replacement
Two major Pakistan Air Force stories this week — a crash that deserves honest context, and a high-level visit to Ankara that signals where PAF modernisation is heading.
Story 1 — FT-7PG Crash, Mianwali (20 May 2026)
A PAF FT-7PG trainer aircraft went down near Mianwali during a training sortie on 20 May 2026. The pilot ejected safely. No PAF official statement on cause has been issued — initial technical snag reports remain unconfirmed. One day earlier a JF-17 crashed near Kamra. Some Indian media framed both as a "Chinese reliability" story — we explain why that framing is misleading. The honest picture: an aging airframe over 35 years in PAF service, J-7 production halted in China since 2013, spares increasingly scarce, Mianwali with a documented accident history going back decades. We cover replacement status — PAF targets 400 fourth-generation fighters, currently sits at approximately 263, roughly 140 still needed. Three F-7PG squadrons remain — No. 17, 20, and 23. Quwa assesses full retirement by 2030. JF-17 production slowed to under 10 airframes per year in 2025 due to RD-93 shortages. Export orders keeping the line active but domestic replacement gap is real.
Story 2 — ACM Sidhu Official Visit to Turkey (18 May 2026)
Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu held confirmed meetings with Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler, TuAF Commander General Ziya Cemal Kadıoğlu, and — significantly — Baykar Technologies CTO Selçuk Bayraktar. ISPR confirmed the Baykar meeting explicitly focused on unmanned aerial systems and next-generation technologies. Visit coincided with EFES-2026 exercise Pakistan is participating in. We break down: Kızılelma's world-first BVR air-to-air kill November 2025, why Kızılelma is qualitatively different from TB2 and Akinci in contested airspace, MUM-T doctrine explained, PAF's existing Indus Shield 2023 MUM-T demonstration, the 2024 Pakistan-Turkey BVR missile R&D merger and what MURAD AESA software stack access actually means for Pakistani weapons integration on Turkish platforms. Indonesia signed first ever Kızılelma export deal May 2026 — 12 aircraft deliveries from 2028. No formal Pakistan KAAN contract publicly announced as of May 2026 — confirmed by Quwa.
⚠️ Confirmed facts, official statements, and analyst assessments are always clearly distinguished throughout.
