James Mclaughlin's Visit to Weeki Wachee Springs (2017)

In 1958, at the young age of seven, James visited the park for the first time, and that visit changed his life in many ways. The mermaids inspired him to become a Navy Deep Sea Diver. James never did return to the City of Live Mermaids - until today. He saw a recent article about Vicki Smith, who swam as a mermaid in 1958, and continues to perform to this day. He saw this return trip as an opportunity to fulfill his wish of coming full-circle, and give back to the mermaids who inspired him in his life. During his visit today, James met Vicki, and presented her with his Navy Deep Sea Diver pin that he's been holding onto for many years, waiting for this moment in time. We would like to thank James for making the trip from his home in Austin, Texas, and we hope to see him again in the near future.
