Storing Potatoes Long Term - Save Your Potato Harvest
So you had a great crop of potatoes. Now all you need to do is preserve and store them in order to be able to get the most from that crop. In this video, I am going to show you 4 fantastic ways in which to store your potatoes t last all winter and long into next year. Stay tuned as I'm also going to give you some tips throughout to keep your own potatoes as the seed for next year.
One of the biggest issues that affect some people who grow large numbers of potatoes is storage, Either they do it wrong, or just don’t know how to do it. Following this video will ensure that you will have fresh good quality tubers right through the winter and late into spring.
It’s amazing that its the end of October and I still have potatoes that are green and have not been hit with blight. I really need to get these particular ones out of the ground though as We had our first frost last night and that is the end for these.
Storing potatoes starts at harvest time. You need to lift your potatoes carefully as any damage while doing this means you cannot store that potato as it will rot during storage. Lift your potatoes and ensure not to throw them about, any damage to the skins or bruising will render the potato useless for storing so take your time, be methodical and care about your tubers.
This is another reason why I love growing potatoes in containers. Not only do you get better yields, as per the potato experiment video, And if you have not seen that yet I will put a link in the cards and the description. But you can harvest the potatoes using your hands, no chance of scraping or damaging the tubers with a fork or spade. This is probably the easiest and best way to harvest potatoes
However, If you have sown in the ground I have some tips for ensuring that you don’t damage them.
Tip 1. when harvesting from the ground dig a hole to the side of the plant and then left the tubers from beneath rather than trying to cut down through them
Tip 2 Once you have the first plant out, Use a fork or spade and work as though you are digging a trench, this will ensure you are always below the tubers and this will have a better chance of success of not damaging your potatoes
Tip 3. When you pull them out of the soil do not throw them into a pile, Landing hard in this fashion bumping against each other will create bruising later and these will rot.
