The Boogie-Woogie Accordion Boy of Lancaster County

Servant Stage Company is a wonderful non-profit theater group in Strasburg, Pennsylvania. It serves the Lancaster County community by making musical and theatrical experiences easily accessible to everyone, especially people with financial or physical limitations, with fun and entertaining pay-what-you-will performances. In 2019 alone, they staged more than 160 shows for over 50,000 people in parks, schools, retirement communities, nursing homes, churches, and community events.

This performance, by virtuoso accordion player Cody McSherry, was part of a production called “I’ll Fly Away”. It took place outside the Mountville Church of the Brethren on July 8, 2018, with hundreds of people sitting on lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show.

Boogie-woogie first became popular as piano music in the late 1920s and was adapted for orchestras in the Big Band era of the 1940s and 50s. It’s the favorite style of music of my dad, who was born in 1928. Dad has loved this type of music all his life (he and Mom danced to it in their younger days), and he told me he had never heard it played on an accordion before watching this video.
