Julia and Ruth Brock, aka Paul Sisters, were true sisters. They were born in Conrad, Iowa. Julia was born in 1905 and Ruth was born in 1907. Their father was the town dentist and their mother was a school teacher and accomplished seamstress. The girls were known from an early age to be musical and were noted for their duets. Following their father’s death due to the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1920, they moved to Chicago to finish high school at Elias Day music high school. They started their singing career in Chicago musical reviews and Milwaukee clubs. It was in Chicago that they met Paul Whiteman. They had been performing as the Brock Sisters, but there was another group by that name, so at Mr. Whiteman’s suggestion they changed their performing name to The Paul(l) Sisters. After traveling the mid-West with his orchestra, they moved to New York City. The began their singing and recording career with Phil Spitalny’s orchestra in the mid-1920’s. In the world of male vocalists with the Big Bands in the 1920’s, The Paul Sisters were pioneers because of their sweet harmony of the two voices. They then moved to performing in radio. In NYC they made the acquaintance of Irving and Ira Berlin. Frequently, they would get a call to come to Irving Berlin’s offices and perform one of his new songs so he could hear it with live voices. He was a great admirer of their harmony. Once WWII broke out in Europe, Mrs. Brock felt it was time to return to Chicago. They performed briefly in clubs in and around Chicago and in Canada. Finally, around 1943, they retired from show business. Julia married Robert May, one of Jimmie Lynch’s Death Dodgers, in 1946. They settled in Florida. Julia died in 2009. Ruth was never married. She went on to work for the Manhattan Project as a courier until 1954. She died in Chicago in 1971.
