Tesla Heat Pump & Thermal Management with Supercharging

Check out this observation of thermal management operation during a supercharging session in a Tesla Model Y with a Heat-Pump. This supercharger has maximum available power of 75kW which isn’t extremely high vs the 250kW chargers however, all Tesla vehicle should be using navigation when planning to visit a Supercharger. The reason for this is so that the battery management system (BMS) can properly prepare the battery for charging. If not, then the vehicle will be unable to charge at the higher current levels. Additionally, if the ambient conditions are cool with high humidity, there is a chance that you’ll see condensing air (looks like steam) coming from the front of the vehicle. This video highlights how the Heat Pump system can chill an isolated coolant loop within the radiator circuit so that it may be able to use that to manage elevated coolant temperatures.
